The Form Has Chosen

The cat can go on and on and on and it may form this or it may form that or it may form that and this or this and that or it just may go on and be a rhyme any old time at the drop of a dime and become a run on sentence that makes you annoyed and the cat joyed and the dogs who cares as they yap in pairs and now I am done with my no comma or period fun. Didn't that just go anywhere? Yeah. I know you are used to that at my lair. Now on with the task of the quote and the ask. Two things? Geez, really want us to work.

Quote: "Although I have written a short story collection, the form found me and not the other way around. Don't write short stories, novels or poems. Just write your truth and your stories will mold into the shapes they need to be."
Have you ever written a piece that became a form, or even a genre, you hadn't planned on writing in? Or do you choose a form/genre in advance?

This one I sure can stick by. I just get an idea and go. I've had plenty of short stories that sure become longer than short and swapped genres here and there. Sometimes I don't even swap genres and just mash them all together. A cat time travel machine can do that, you know.

Not sure how much truth there is sometimes. Although when I write first person a lot of truth seems to seep in there. But many a story does just mold how they will as away I go. I do know the beginning and end and beats to hit, but other than that pffft. Who wants to think that much? Takes away writing time. Wait! Writing time? What's that? A lack of the cat? How rude, Pat.

Do your stories or blog posts go places you haven't thought about or thought they would? Do you agree with the quote? How are all in blogland these days? Blame Pat and the 9-5 for his lazy arse streak. And maybe that other spot too. And now we are through. Hopefully no germs got you.

Enjoy life, forget the strife.

  4. I have the general gist of my story but I let it go where it feels good as I write too. I'm surprised sometimes to see it working.

  7. Assistants... the cat's lucky he's got you. Works you hard. Does he let you play? If so, is it only with a keypad so he hears you tip tapping away - letting cat know you're close at hand, treats are still within reach - as you form this and that... or was it that and this?
I enjoy your word play. :)

  10. My blog has sort of evolved over the years. I used to never post photos I’ve taken, but now it’s basically a picture diary of my life.

You are definitely missed in Blogland!

  11. We've missed you in Blogger, cat!! Actually, I may retract that statement b/c I have a feeling that you'll hold it over my head forever. Yes, there are many times that I sit down thinking I'm going to write about one thing and end up writing about something else. It happens all the time. OR, my absolute favorite, I write about one thing and get a wave of about 50 ideas that stemmed from it. Or, the worst. You sit there and thing "I don't even want to write this, who the hell would want to read it?". Then the whole thing goes in the garbage.

    1. haha the cat will never let that go. Just like you know the 50 other things you told him. Good with the ideas go in 50 different ways. The garbage we haven't had in a long time. Saves on recycling lol

  15. I finished your book "Detoured" recently and that did go many places but, it was cohesive and
kept me interested. That family really has been through so much though. I like how you slip in little bits of truth and wisdom in your stories.

I miss seeing your around here, I guess the other place is more fun.

Don't get lost in that cat time machine.

    1. Yeah, that is way more grounded then many of the other stories.

I'm sure I won't get lost in a cat time machine any time soon.

  16. I wrote some stories for fun when I was a kid. Story sometimes went to unintended direction. But I never finished any of those stories. I’m clearly not a good writer!

  17. I wear a mask when I read your posts (just kidding). I'd say you can go bonkers in any direction and it turns out fun, creative, and unique. All positive stuff. Right now - this is crazy time - so stay lazy or go berserk. Whatever works. Take care

  18. I've definitely gone off track a time or two. Sometimes you sit down to write, but your mind has a whole other direction it wants to take. Welcome back to this side of the dark side, though you've been pretty consistent posting at that other place :)

    1. Yeah, the mind just wants to go a whole other way. I stay active at least somewhere. The cat has to get his ten cents in.

  19. Mine are usually just product related. I quite getting personal for the most part, a long time ago. It's not really a creative outlet, but more of a hobby I enjoy. Sponsored posts fit the structure for what was asked of me to do. Not a lot of room to be creative there either, though I suppose if I were a writer at heart like the cat, that would easily come forth too. :)

    1. Yeah, you could get creative out of anything if you really tried. Except maybe accounting, as that would land you in jail lol

  20. Fun to see you back alive, and glad you have a 9-to-5. Love your new final rhyme; so perfect for the time! I love to let my writing go and take me places I don't know, but it's always fun to have a plan, even if it takes off in a moving van.

    1. Never know where that moving van will go. The 9 to 5 can sure suck the time away as away we go.

  23. Hey Pat,

Your writing synapses are always working:)

  24. You have written many a book and I'm sure your blog posts could go in any direction.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know the beginning, a direction to go towards the end, and the rest is up to the characters and setting to flesh out. I've had a story that started out a contemporary thriller but worked its way into a fantasy. That was a fun surprise.

  26. Some stories just insist on being told no matter what the genre.
What's the secret of forgetting the strife?
